From Malaga Airport to Estepona, it´s around 84km, depending on whereabouts in Estepona you´re staying. Don´t forget about Gibraltar Airport which is another option and also Jerez if you´re staying inland. Weigh up the cost of flights, travel costs, hiring a car and also your time travelling.
We recently flew out of Gibraltar as the flights were 100€ cheaper but then the parking was a lot more expensive (granted we didn’t book in advance), so do your homework. Don’t forget that public transport stops around midnight at Malaga, so those cheap late night flights could end up costing an expensive taxi ride!
Hiring a car is the best solution if travelling with your family. A return journey from Malaga Airport by taxi probably won´t be far off the price of hiring a car for a week. You can get a quote here. Tips! Don´t go for the smallest car because you don’t want to have any luggage on show and make sure there´s aircon! We do understand that many people don’t like driving abroad, but with Google Maps and all these other apps for directions, it really couldn’t be easier. Here’s some driving tips and advice which might help.
Unfortunately the train only runs as far as Fuengirola, read more about the Malaga Airport train here. I guess you could take the train to Fuengirola and then a bus to Estepona, but the direct bus from the airport is probably a better solution (see below).

Buses from the airport are limited, so another option is to take the train to Maria Zambrano and go up stairs to Malaga Bus Station where you may have more options. Alternatively the Express A bus goes to Malaga Bus Station too. Buying your ticket and just relaxing in the cafe outside arrivals is probably your best option. Caffe di Fiore between the arrivals hall and the bus stops.
As you leave the arrivals hall you will see the taxi rank over to the right. Malaga to Estepona is a long way so don´t expect much change from around 120€. You can see rough Malaga Airport Taxi prices here. There are meters in the taxis now, so please make sure they are on. Another piece of advice is not to start unpacking in the taxi, especially at night. We receive many emails from people losing items and sadly never getting them back.
Private transfers are great as it´s all booked and paid for in advance. The driver will meet you in the arrivals hall and take you directly to your destination. This is a great option of you´re travelling alone at night as the buses stop around midnight. By booking a shared transfer it´s all paid for upfront. It won´t be the quickest route though as you will be dropping people off along the way. They will drop you at the nearest hotel to where you are staying so you may need to arrange someone to pick you up or take a short taxi journey. Read more about Malaga Shared Transfers and get a quote here. There will be a designated area to meet your driver.Advertisement
Estepona is a lovely area and if renting an apartment, will probably get more for your money than say in Marbella. The beaches are fabulous too. Make sure you take a wander around the Old Town which is buzzing in the summer. There´s some fabulous restaurants there too.
There are a few shops in the town centre but if you´re looking for all the big high street names then you would need to go to Puerto Banus, La Cañada or the shopping centre in Algeciras. The main market which sells everything from clothes to fruit and veg is on a Wednesday on the Feria Ground. There is also a nice little market on Sundays in Estepona Port for clothes, jewellery and bags. Find more information about Costa Del Sol Markets and the exact locations.
