Overview of Driving in Spain

With all the technology we have at our fingertips, driving in Spain has never been easier whether you use Google Maps or a similar app. If you hire a car, you have the freedom to go anywhere you want, along the Costa Del Sol, Andalucia or even the rest of Spain. Driving in Spain is great because the main roads are generally in very good condition to drive on. Andalucia is a vast and beautiful region to explore, as is the rest of Spain.  

Dangers of Driving in Spain

Whilst we say driving in Spain is great, some roads do have dangerous bends. For example, the N340 (Coast Road) from Fuengirola to Marbella. The speed limit is 80km/h, but there are still many accidents along this road. Take good care when driving and don’t get distracted.

Roads from Malaga Airport to the Costa del Sol

The roads from Malaga Airport to the rest of the Costa del Sol are well-signposted. Generally, the traffic moves freely. However, there is a commuter rush hour around 8.30am and around 6pm on the Malaga-Benalmadena-Fuengirola-Marbella part of the road. Also, if there is an accident, this can halt traffic for a couple of hours.

Mountains and Sea: Finding the Way Is Easy

With the sea and the mountains, it’s easy to know what direction you are driving in on the Costa del Sol. If you’re driving from Malaga Airport towards Estepona/Gibraltar, the sea is on your left and the mountains on your right. If you’re driving from Malaga Airport towards Malaga City / Nerja, the sea is on your right and the mountains on your left.  

Driving Vs Public Transport

There is a local train line that runs between Malaga City and Fuengirola, stopping at Malaga Airport on the way. However, if you’re travelling south, once you pass Fuengirola there are no trains. To get to Marbella, Estepona or Gibraltar, you must take a taxi or a bus.

• The trains are brilliant, fast, cheap and efficient so if you’re staying near one of the train stations, we recommend you use the train.  
• If you’re staying further down the coast and want to see things, you should hire a car.

First Time Driving Abroad?

Is it your first time driving abroad? Honestly, once you do it, you’ll never look back. Having the freedom of a car when you go on holiday is fantastic. Especially here on the Costa Del Sol, there is so much to do and see. If you’re from the UK, it does feel a bit strange the first time you sit in a left-hand-drive car, but the coordination will come very quickly once you get the hang of it.

Some Driving Tips for First Timers

• Please make sure you know the driving/traffic rules in Spain.
• Sit in the car and become familiar with the pedals, gears and mirrors before taking off.
• Some British travellers feel automatic cars are easier for them when first driving abroad, although others say that the gears help you with your coordination.
• European roundabouts are tricky for British drivers, so as you are approaching, keep saying to yourself, give way to the left, drive around to the right.
• Keep at a reasonable speed, not too slow, but not too fast and don’t feel pressured by other drivers.
• Keep noise within the car to a minimum so you can concentrate.
• Keep your eyes on the cars 2 or 3 ahead, traffic can suddenly stop.
• Where there is an exit, if possible, move over to the fast lane to allow cars to join.
• Remember, as long as you are driving a lefthand drive car in Spain, passengers are on the side of the hard shoulder, and the driver is in the centre.
• NEVER try to turn left or across a dual carriageway.  Just continue until you come to a ´Cambio de Sentido´which is a Change of Direction.  Do NOT risk your life to save a couple of minutes.
• If you miss your exit, do NOT panic. Places where you can turn around and change direction are frequent on most Spanish roads. You’ll see them on the blue and white signs, marked as “Cambio de Sentido”.
