Public Transport Costa Del Sol

Learning how to use the Public Transport and figuring out the routes in a foreign country can be very confusing and overwhelming. If you don´t speak Spanish or know how to search in Spanish, you may not find what you are looking for. So here are all the public transport Costa Del Sol website links to help you.

Costa Del Sol Trains

The train only goes as far as Fuengirola and Álora. If you´re looking for a cheap holiday and don´t wish to hire a car, staying somewhere along the train line is a great option. The train is cheap, quick and efficient. There are many buses that travel up and down the coast all day long.  It may be a little confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it´s a very cheap way of getting around the Costa Del Sol if you are not hiring a car.

So, here is your complete, easy guide to Public Transport & Companies here on the Costa Del Sol, Andalucia and the rest of Spain providing National & International Routes.

Local Malaga Train / Cercanias Malaga

The Train System here is fantastic, there are Main Line Trains and Local Area Trains which are called “Cercanias”.  Malaga Cercanias is one of them and you will also find the ‘Cercanias’ in all these other cities in Spain BarcelonaBilbaoCadizMadridMurcia / Alicante & San Sebastian.

Malaga Cercanias runs direct from Malaga Airport and you can travel to any of these stops below, as far into the Costa del Sol as Fuengirola or Inland as far as Alora.   All stations are wheelchair friendly except for Torremolinos which doesn’t have any access other than escalators or steps at the moment.  From conversations on our Facebook Page, there are some stations that we have been informed are a little tricky, especially if you are on your own.

Trains In Spain

RENFE are the Mainline Train Company which includes the fantastic AVE for medium and long distance journeys.    We personally travelled via AVE from Malaga to Madrid, it was a fantastic, fast, comfortable journey.  Book well in advance for the best prices, otherwise it can be quite expensive.  Trains are generally extremely clean, efficient and very comfortable. It’s a fabulous way of travelling.

From Malaga Airport, take the Cercanias to Maria Zambrano which is the main hub for all other destinations like Cordoba, Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao.

Metro

There are 2 Lines on the Malaga Metro, both lines connect to the station El Perchal which is the station you should go to for the main RENFE Malaga Station Maria Zambrano or Malaga Bus station.  This is also home to the VIALIA Shopping Centre. There are a lot of roadworks going on in and around Malaga City as they are extending the Malaga Metro now.

Buses / Autobuses

There are numerous Bus Companies that run all along the Costa Del Sol as well as Nationally and Internationally.

  • Avanza and Avanza Portillo  These are the buses direct from Malaga Airport to Marbella, Estepona and Algeciras.  They also run direct from bus station to bus station along the Coast and Inland.  The website can be a little tricky to navigate  sometimes.
  • ALSA is a subsidiary of National Express and offer Airport, Regional, National and International Routes.  There are a few long distance routes directly from Malaga Airport.
  • CTMAM covers the whole Malaga Region and runs all along the Costa Del Sol and Inland with numerous stops along the way.
  • Autobuses Urbanos are local and neighbouring area buses.  See below.

Local Area Buses / Autobuses Urbanos

These are local buses that stay within the local and neighbouring areas.  If you are travelling outside of your area, have a look at CTMAM website or Avanza on the links above as well.
