Monarch Airlines
If you are lucky enough to be faced with a choice of airlines which can transport you to or from Malaga Costa del Sol Airport then you might like to have a look at the fact sheet we have compiled on Monarch Airlines.
It's always difficult to weigh up the pros and cons, so to help you we have listed the main items we check when making a reservation. By doing this on one page it makes it easier to compare what's on offer with other airlines you are considering.

Making your Reservation
| Booking your Seats | There is no priority boarding scheme with Monarch but you can pre-book your seats when you make the booking or up to 4.5 hours before departure. You need to pre-book your seats if you want to be able to check in online. |
| Booking Fees | A booking fee of 3.5% will be applied to all payment methods except Solo and Visa Electron which are free. Credit card payments will incur an additional fee of 1.5% (making a total of 5%.Minimum fees of £5.49/€6.99 for credit cards, £2.49/€2.99 for PayPal and debit cards apply. |
| Passengers with Special Needs | If you have any mobility problems or special needs you should ideally contact Monarch before you make a reservation or at least 48 hours prior to travel so that the necessary arrangements can be made. | Flying with animals | Monarch transports pets in the hold of the aircraft under the PETS Passport Scheme authorised by DEFRA. This can be done Monday to Friday but not on weekends. Pets can be carried from all of Monarch’s scheduled UK departure airports, but can only be returned via London Gatwick or Manchester. To make all the necessary arrangements call 0845 680 9002. |
| Travel Insurance | You can book travel insurance (single trip or annual) with Monarch as part of your flight booking. It is supplied by Rock Insurance Services and will automatically cover each policy holder up to £500 for replacement ticket cover with no excess to pay. |
Changing Your Booking
| Name Change | Change of flight or passenger name – can be done online up to 4.5 hours before take off but it is chargeable Name changes cost £100 / €125.00 per name, per booking online or £120 / €150.00 via call centre |
| Flight Change | You can save over 30% by changing to your flight details online: £27.50 / €34,00 single flight or £40 / €50,00 via call centre. Plus any difference in cost between the original fare purchased and the fare at the time of making the change (if higher). |
All About Baggage
| Hold Baggage | If you need to put bags in the hold then you can check them in when you make your booking online. Prices range from £9,99 / €12,49 & £16.99 / €20,99 one way depending on the route. If you check them in via the call centre charges start at £18 / €23,00 and at the airport it is £18 / €21,00. So the trick is to pay online and save up to 40% per bag! Total hold baggage allowance = 20kg per person (plus 10kg for any infants). This is regardless of the number of bags booked per passenger. For example, if you have three bags the overall weight allowance for the three bags must not exceed 20kg or excess baggage fees will apply |
| Hand/Cabin Baggage | You can take up to 10kg of hand baggage (dimensions should not exceed 56cm x 45cm x 25cm) free of charge. If you are carrying bags which exceed the weight and size restrictions they will be placed in the hold and you will be charged for them. Laptops and other large electrical items (hairdryers) have to be removed from cabin baggage and screened separately. A laptop bag that is not contained within the one piece of cabin baggage is regarded as the one allowable item of cabin baggage. |
| Excess Baggage | Excess baggage is accepted subject to hold space and operational capacity. The costs are: Short haul flights - £9 / €11,00 per kg: Long haul flights - £12 / €15 per kg. You can pre-book excess baggage online in bundles of 3kg, up to a maximum of 12 extra kg before you fly at the discounted rate of £7.50 / €9.00 per extra kg. |
| Children's Equipment | If you are travelling with an infant you are allowed up to 30kg of hold/checked-in baggage as long as you have paid the relevant per bag charge. Pushchairs are carried in the hold of the aircraft free of charge and do not count as part of the hold baggage allowance. Pushchairs can be used up to the aircraft steps when you board and then loaded into the hold. |
| Sports Equipment | You can add sports equipment online when making a booking but you will not be able to go back and add it once the booking is complete. If you complete a booking and then need to add sports equipment call the reservations centre or pay at the airport. To give you an indication of charges: golf clubs, surf, kite surfers, body boards, skis, snowboards and scuba diving equipment cost £23.50 / €30,00. Bicycles, Hang gliders, Windsurfing boards, Canoes & Kayaks up to 32kg cost £35 / €44,00 per item. Pay at airport only. |
At the Airport
| Online check in | You can only use online check in if you select and pay for your seats which range in price from standard allocated seats from £7.50 per person or extra legroom seats from just £15.00 per person. Online check-in is available from 7 days prior to departure and closes at 4.5 hours prior to departure. |
| Airport check in | Monarch do have check in desks at the airport. The check in times are 3 hours before departure for long haul flights and at least 90 minutes before departure on short haul. The check in closes 40 minutes before departure (sometimes 60 minutes for long haul flights). |
| Fast Bag Drop | Fast bag drop desks are open from 3 hours prior to departure and close 40 minutes before departure. Allow plenty of time for checking in your baggage, clearing security and proceeding to departures as some departure gates are some distance from check-in. |
| Airport Lounges | London Luton & Birmingham: £18.00 / €22.50 per person |
During Your Flight
| On Board Meals/Snacks | You can pre-order in-flight hot meals at a discounted online rate up to 24 hours before departure which comprises chicken or vegetarian meal with entrée, bread roll and butter, cheese and crackers and a dessert. The meal costs £6.50 and is served with complimentary tea or coffee. If your flight departs before 11:00 am (local time) your meal will be a hot breakfast with entrée, orange juice, bread roll & butter and a mini-muffin. Children's meals are also available. If you do not want to pre order a meal then you can purchase freshly made sandwiches, toasted panini and sweet and savoury snacks as well as soft drinks, beers, wines and champagne. |
| Use of laptop. MP3 player, etc | Portable games, laptops and stereos can be used during the flight but not during take off and landing. Mobile phones must be turned off before boarding and not switched on until well inside the airport terminal building. |
