  • Avis & Budget
  • Sixt
  • Europcar
  • Record & Go
  • Goldcar / Interent
  • Hertz & Firefly
  • OK Mobility

There are over 20 car hire companies at Malaga, but only a few of them are located inside the airport. Avis & Budget, Sixt, Europcar, Record & Go, Goldcar/Interent, Hertz/Firefly & OK Mobility. These are located downstairs (sotano) of terminal 2.

In an article by The Guardian, Sixt, Avis, Hertz and Europcar came in the top 10, which can be found inside the Malaga Airport Terminal, so when booking via the Car Hire form above, look out for these firms.

You can often hire a car for a week, for the same price as a one-way taxi journey from Malaga Airport to MarbellaWe always suggest to friends and family to hire a car at Malaga airport, especially in the cooler months when driving around and exploring is so much fun.

There are so many beautiful white villages to see and also some amazing Cities all within a couple of hours driveGranadaMalagaJerez de la FronteraCadizCordoba, and Seville.  The public transport here is great, but only up to Fuengirola.  Thereafter, there are no trains, only buses.

Saying all this, we totally understand that there are many people who don´t want the hassle of hiring and driving a car.   We do have some driving tips here if you change your mind and you can always come and chat with us and others on The Costa Del Sol Travel Forum.

Finding Car Hire Desks Inside Malaga Airport

If you have decided to hire a car using one of the companies located inside the airport, they may be situated downstairs by the baggage carousels or upstairs by carousel 31.

Once you have found your car hire company, be sure you have all the necessary documents, including your driving license.

You will be surprised how many people forget to bring this.   You may also need a DVLA Code. In high season, expect to queue, it can become very busy.  Once you have picked up your keys, a member of staff will inform you on which level of the car park and bay you can find your car. Both car parks are connected to Terminal 3 through the transportation hub.  We also provide information on Minibus Hire,  Driving Directions from Malaga Airport, and How to Get your DVLA Code

Drop-Off Points Car Hire Malaga

As you approach Malaga Airport, drive a little slower to avoid any mistakes.  The lanes to the right will take you up to the departures area.  You need to take the lanes to the left and follow the signs for Car Hire / Alquilar.

There are corresponding desks for each car hire company in the car park where you can drop off the keys so you do not have to return the keys to the original office in the terminal. The car parks are on floors 0 and -1 of the P2 car park (for picking up vehicles) and on floors -1 and -2 of the P1 car park (for their return).

If you have any questions you can come and join our Facebook Page Malaga Airport EU and also be part of The Costa Del Sol Travel Forum where you can chat with others about travel, living, holidaying on the Costa Del Sol.

Tips When Booking A Car

  • Book flights before car hire so you know the times of pick up and collection taking into consideration collecting bags and dropping the car off 2 hours before departure.
  • Shop around and book your car asap for the best price.
  • Add your flight number to the car booking so they know when to expect you.
  • Air-conditioning is a MUST especially June to September.
  • Book any extras like child seats or restraints which are a legal requirement in Spain especially during the summer months when supplies can run out.  (This may be a separate payment with the company direct).
  • Don´t book the smallest. You do not want your suitcases on show and you want to be comfortable while driving.
  • Make sure you get unlimited mileage
  • Remember everyone’s driving license who wishes to be a named driver.
  • Name drivers are an extra cost, so be sure it´s worth adding them.
  • Think about taking the zero-liability insurance.  This brings the excess cost of any damage down to zero (you won’t have to pay for any bumps, scratches etc.). It will also give you peace of mind and you won’t be charged a credit card deposit until the car is returned unscathed.
  • Read the small print on the voucher.

Tips When Collecting Your Car

  • Avoid the queues at the desks (especially during the summer months).  Leave the non-driver to collect the cases and ask them to meet you at the Car Hire Desk.
  • Any problems whatsoever call the number on your Car Hire Voucher.
  • If you are pushed for upgrades, think do you really need it? If they say it´s free – triple check that it´s free.
  • Take your time to check the car for any scratches or damage.  If you have a mobile with you take photos of any damage and report it.
  • Before setting off, become familiar with the car and if driving at night, make sure your lights are on.
  • Take care when collecting your car, don’t get distracted by people or leave your bags anywhere.

Tips When Returning Your Car

  • Planning the return – Make sure you return the car in time; some companies charge extra fees for late car returns. Use the application on your phone to map out the best return route.
  • Refuel your car – Online maps apps can help you find a petrol station close to where you’re returning the car. Make sure the fuel tank is full when the car is returned. It will be much cheaper to refuel the car yourself than getting charged by the rental company.
  • When dropping the car off, make sure you leave it in the correct space or you could be fined.
  • Take photos – Once you’ve parked the car, take a photo of the fuel gauge and the car mileage. Then take photos of the car’s front, rear and sides. That should cover you against any fake damage charges.
  • Final checks – Make sure you give one last look to the door pockets, glove compartments, under the seats and boot to see if you’ve forgotten or lost something (phone, passport, documents etc.). It’s easier to spend five minutes doing this than spending hours trying to track down the lost phone or passport.
  • Return your keys – Return the car keys to the agent, revise the car together and sign off the rental paperwork. During late hours, if the agency is closed and there’s no agent lookout for the dropbox (they are usually marked with the company logo).

Other tips

  • Speed Limits – In Spain speed limits are implemented rigorously. Radar traps are frequent.

According to the Spanish law, it is considered a penal crime to break the maximum speed limit by more than 60% (punishable with up to 6 months of prison)

  • Motorway 120 km/h
  • Open Road 80 – 100 km/h
  • Town 30 – 50 km/h
  • Blood alcohol level – A minimum fine of between 500 € and 1.000 € will be applied to drivers caught driving over the drink-drive limit.
    • Normal limit 0.5 mg/ml (0.8 mg/ml in UK)
    • New drivers limit 0.1 mg/ml
