If you do hire a car in Spain then it is important that you remember:
Seatbelts must be worn at all times by everyone (front and rear passengers)travelling in the car
- The use of cellphones while driving is prohibited. Hands-free kits are permitted but not if they have earpiece attachments.
- The use of screen-based navigation systems is prohibited.
If you are stopped when driving in Spain be aware that there are three types of police offices here: Guardia Civil, Policia Municipal and the Policia Nacional. The most likely thing they will catch you for is not wearing your fluorescent jacket (supplied with the hire car) when stepping out of the car. Spanish law says all passengers must wear these jackets whenever you stop by the side of a highway so make sure you take your time to put it on before you get out of the car.
The Guardia Civil are entitled to ask you to pay your fine immediately if you are a tourist, unless you can prove that there is someone living at a Spanish address that will cover for you if you do not pay. If you are unable to pay immediately they can impound the car. So it is best to hand over the money, especially as there is a 20% reduction if you do. But make sure you get a receipt as you can use this to appeal if you think the police officer has been unfair.
